Bridges, as we know are basically structures that spans horizontally between supports, whose function is to carry vertical loads. Hence the supports must be strong enough to hold the structure up, and the span between supports must be strong enough to carry the loads.

In the course of the past two centuries bridge bearings evolved as parts of immense sophistication and complexity in modern bridges. The ever-increasing spans went hand in hand with the rapid growth of the loads to be carried. For reasons of safety it became essential to implement those bearings in the structures arrived at theoretically by structural calculations before.

Bearings are designed to transmit vertical and horizontal loads from the superstructure to the substructure, while allowing specific movements and rotations of the superstructure caused by wind or seismic effects, temperature variations, deck deflections, elastic shortening due to creep, shrinkage or post-tensioning, etc. The same principles apply to all types of structures where forces are exerted. Dutco Tennant’s advanced solution anticipates and counteracts these forces.

The choice of the type of bearing to be used depends on the type of structures, on the design loads, movements and rotations and can be affected also by the environmental conditions of the project.
