Strainers are closed vessels that collect solid particles to be separated while passing a fluid through a removable screen. The screens can collect particles down to 0.001 inches in diameter. They can remove more than unwanted material. They can also remove wanted materials that can be used elsewhere or in other processes. You can find strainers upstream of sensitive equipment such as meters, pumps, compressors, traps, valves, and filters. Strainers can be found in almost every industry ranging from chemical, food, water, petroleum, paint, etc. Strainers come in different configurations such as Y Strainers, Simplex Strainers, Duplex Strainers, and Temporary Strainers. They can be bolted, threaded or welded in line.

Strainers are used to protect the Valves, Pumps, and Meters etc and are usually installed in the upstream to filter the unwanted particles from the medium. The most common types used are the “Y “ type and the Basket type. These are available with various material combinations and end connections.

Y-Strainers are devices for mechanically removing unwanted solids from liquid, gas or steam lines by means of a perforated or wire mesh straining element. They are used in pipelines to protect pumps, meters, control valves, steam traps, regulators and other process equipment. Y-Strainers are very cost-effective straining solutions in many applications. Where the amount of material to be removed from the flow is relatively small, resulting in long intervals between screen cleanings, the strainer screen in manually cleaned by shutting down the line and removing the strainer cap.

Basket strainer is a closed vessel with cleanable screen element designed to remove and retain foreign particles down to 0.001-inch diameter from various flowing fluids. Strainers necessarily do not remove only dirt, they take out material which is not anted in the fluid and this can sometimes be a valuable product which may be saved. Basket strainers are designed for installation in horizontal lines. They are commonly used for liquid service applications. Basket Strainers are generally used where high flow capacity is required. The Basket Strainer is serviced by removing the cover, which yields access to the basket. Basket Strainers are also available in a duplex style which consists of two parallel basket Strainers and diverting valves, which permit diversion of the flow through one of the Strainer elements while the other element is being serviced - an essential feature where the flow cannot be interrupted. Dutco Tennant LLC offers a wide product inventory for strainers which are well-engineered to perform with grace.
