Y-Strainers are amazing devices that are used for removing unwanted solids from gas, liquids, or steam lines mechanically with the help of a perforated or wire mesh straining element. In pipelines, they are used for protecting meters, pumps, steam traps, control valves, regulators, and other process equipment. They are highly cost-effective straining solutions for several applications even in agriculture and horticulture. Where the amount of material that is required for removing from the flow is very small, which results in long intervals between screen cleanings, the strainer screen is cleaned manually by shutting down the line and removing the strainer cap. For applications where heavy dirt is found, Y-Strainers can be fitted with a “blow-off” connection which allows the screen to be cleaned without removing it from the body of the strainer. In a wide variety of liquid straining applications, Y-Strainer is used for protecting downstream process system components in several industries like power generation, chemical processing, marine, and petroleum. For protecting the equipment which can be clogged or damaged by unwanted gravel, sand, or other debris, usage of water handling applications is highly common. A y-strainer is considered to be the standard for steam application in various types of liquid applications and is almost universally used for all of these applications. It is compact, has a cylindrical shape, and is very strong which can handle high pressures. It is literally a pressure vessel. Y-Strainers can handle pressures of around 6000 PSI and are not that uncommon. In these cases, of course, the design of the strainer is very critical and it can stand up to these high pressures without the fear of failing. When the high-pressure steam is being handled, another complicating factor is the temperature. With steam pressures of 1500 psi or higher, standard carbon steel is in several cases not meant as the steam temperature can be 1000-degree F or more.
