Reverse osmosis is one of the most common and effective water treatment systems. The primary filtering media in these systems is an RO membrane. Depending on your application, DT offers state-of-art Reverse Osmosis solutions for seawater desalination, brackish water, and high flow commercial applications. Reverse osmosis is a different type of filtration which uses a semi-permeable, thin membrane with pores small enough to pass pure water through while rejecting larger molecules such as dissolved salts (ions) and other impurities such as bacteria. Reverse osmosis is used to produce highly purified water for drinking water systems, industrial boilers, food and beverage processing, cosmetics, pharmaceutical production, seawater desalination, and many other applications. It has been a recognized technology for more than a century and commercialized since the 1960s.

Advantages of using RO –

  • Simple to operate
  • Does not require hazardous chemicals
  • Energy-efficient, especially when used instead of distillation to produce high-purity water
  • Modular design for ease of installation
  • Reduces water and sewage use costs
  • Can be integrated with an existing membrane filtration system or ion exchange system to achieve up to 80% rinse water cycle

How Does a Ro Membrane Work?

Reverse osmosis water treatment systems work by using high pressure to force water through a semipermeable reverse osmosis membrane element. RO membranes are made of a thick polyamide film that contains tiny pores through which water can flow. RO membrane element pore sizes can vary from 0.1 to 5,000 nanometers (nm) depending on the application. The pores in the RO membrane are small enough to restrict organic compounds such as minerals and salt but allow water molecules to pass through. Reverse osmosis membranes are also porous and restrictive enough to filter out disease-causing pathogens and bacteria from water. A reverse osmosis system is built around its individual membranes. Each membrane is a spiral wound sheet of semi-permeable material. Membranes come with diameters like 4-inch and 8-inch which are most commonly used in the industry. The industry has accepted a 40-inch length as a standard size so that membranes from different manufacturers are interchangeable in equipment systems. Reverse osmosis is a continuously operating treatment technology that uses pressure to pass source water through a thin membrane and thereby separate impurities from water. RO works by reversing the principle of osmosis, the natural tendency of water with dissolved salts to flow through a membrane from lower to higher salt concentrations.
