Plumbing Gate Valves are Bi-directional Multi-Purpose Valves and are available in various materials of construction like Brass, Lead-Free Brass, Bronze, Cast Iron with Rising or Non-Rising Stem for use in Residential and Commercial Buildings. They are typically used in hot and cold water, HVAC, steam, compressed air, gas, and other general utility services. The design of these valves is intended for starting or stopping the flow, and when it is required to have a fluid flow in a straight-line along with very low flow restriction. During operation, these valves are mainly either completely open or completely closed. When the gate valve is completely open, the disk of the gate valve is entirely removed and the disk is entirely drawn up into the bonnet of the valve. An opening for flow through the valve is left by this and at the same internal diameter as the system of pipe in which the installation of the valve is done. For a wide range of liquids, the MEP Gate Valves can be used and when closed, they offer a tight seal.
The Plumbing Gate Valve mainly comprises of three main parts that are bonnet, body and trim. Generally, the body is connected to other equipment with the help of screwed, flanged or welded connections. The bonnet comprises of the moving parts that are attached to the body, mainly with bolts, for allowing maintenance. The valve trim comprises of the gate, the stem, the seat rings and the wedge or disc. Best quality gate valves can be found with various types of wedges or disks. Ranging from the gate valves are usually made by the type of wedge used. Among them the most common one is –
• Solid Wedge – The most common type of disk in use due to its strength and simplicity. With this type of wedge, a valve can be installed in each position and it is preferable for almost all liquids. With a single-piece solid construction, the solid wedge comes and is essentially meant for turbulent flow.
• Flexible Wedge – This is a one-piece disk having a cut around the perimeter for improving the ability to amend the changes or mistakes in the angle among the seats. In shape, size and depth, the reduction will vary; a narrow, shallow cut offers very less flexibility but can take hold of the strength. A cast-in recess or a wider and deeper cut leaves very less material in the middle that makes way for increased flexibility but decreases the strength.
• Split Wedge – This is self-aligning and self-adjusting to both the seat sides. This wedge type comprises of a two-piece construction which stays between the valve body’s tapered seats. This wedge type is extremely suitable for the treating non-condensing liquids and gases at normal temperatures, mainly corrosive liquids.
