A distribution system is an integral part of an electrical power system that conveys electrical power for local usage. The level of a distribution system, voltage level can be classified into three categories:

  • Low Voltage (LV)
  • Medium Voltage (MV)
  • High Voltage (HV).

The distribution system operates on a different voltage level that gets utilized without any reduction.

The low voltage distribution system is an important part of the power distribution network that carries electrical power from the distribution transformer to the consumer's energy meter. The voltage level of a low voltage (LV) distribution system is almost equal to the "Main" voltage of your electrical appliances.

The components of the LV distribution system are:

  • Distribution Transformer - It is the step-down transformer that has a delta linked to the primary winding and secondary winding. This transformer sends the electrical power to the distributor
  • Distributor - It is the conductor from where the tapings can be taken to customers
  • Service Mains - It is the little cable that connects distributors to the consumer's electricity meter.

The distribution networks transport the electricity to end-users at lower voltages. The transmission networks usually contain wires, towers, wooden poles, underground cables, switching tools, reactive power devices, telecommunication tools etc.
