Transformer DBDS Removal System Distribution

This patented, revolutionary, online system provides continuous oil / insulation drying while removing and preventing the build up of oxidation by-products such as acids and other compounds that reduce cooling.

Developed around out proprietary adsorbent - GTsorb The Sentinel (ICU) has unrivalled carrying capacity. Zeolite based oil drying systems have a carry capacity of 20% maximum. This means that they need 45kg of the media to capture 9lt of water.

Sentinel (ICU) requires only 15kg (one third) the mass of media to be able to hold the same volume of water. This enables the Sentinel (ICU) to be more compact and easier to; install and change.

In addition Sentinel (ICU) will remove the oxidation by-products such as acids and dissolved sludge that degrade molecular sieves.

The Sentinel (ICU) has been fitted to transformers of all sizes from 1000MVA Generator transformers to small earthing and industrial transformers where it costs effectiveness makes Sentinels (ICU) a sensible option.

How it works - Key technology - Adsorbents

  • The heart of the Sentinel (ICU) family of transformer insulation condition systems is the proprietary adsorbents, unique to GTS.
  • The use of adsorbents in transformer oil processing is well known and it is a well established technology.
  • From the early days when "Fullers earth" (Attapulgite, Bentonite etc.) were used to remove chemical impurities to the now common transformer oil reclamation (sometimes called Regeneration) plants that use Activated Bauxite (an coarse form of Alumina Oxide - slightly pinkish in colour).
  • When we look at these adsorbents under high magnification we can see that they have a micro-structure much like "Swiss cheese"
  • This burns off means that those columns of media are not available for oil processing and this is why most mobile oil reclamation plants have the columns arranged in 2 banks so that one bank can work while the other bank is recycled.

Even with two banks there is a "dead period" where both banks of media are unavailable due to the need to allow the media to:

  • Burn through completely - 6 -12 hrs
  • Cool enough to allow oil to be passed through once more - 8 -12hrs.
