In many industrial applications, the use of globe valve and gate valve are pretty common. Both the valves have significant contributions in serving the industrial applications. However, many confuse these two valves as they look quite similar.

The truth is both the globe and gate valve are very much different in terms of their functions. At this year’s ADIPEC 2022, the Dutco Tennant LLC is exhibiting a range of globe valves that will offer visitors a chance to witness high-end products up close along with some expert insights.

If you are interested to visit the exhibit then be sure to register for the event which will start from 31st October 2022. Now, before you go and explore the range of valve solutions exhibited at the event, here’s a quick guide to learn about the differences between the globe valve and gate valve.

Globe Valve

Globe Valve is one of the valves in the category of linear motion valves. Its functions include starting and stopping of media as well as controlling the media flow. Due to its suitable design, the globe valve is able to deliver tight seal performance with reduced chance of any leakage.

The globe valve has earned its name as a result of its traditional body design similar to a globe. The valve contains a plug-like element known as the disc that enables or restricts the media flow.

Gate Valve

Gate valves are linear valves that belong to the shutoff valve family. This valve features the wedge-like disc and is commonly used for media isolation as it is capable of tightly sealing off media.

This kind of valve is suitable to be used in applications where there is a requirement for tight sealing. A specialised type of gate valve is also available known as the knife gate valve which is used for handling thicker and more viscous media.

Globe Valve vs Gate Valve - Differences Between The Two

Below we list some of the pivotal areas where the two valves differ from one another.

Structure

The structure or construction of the two valves are quite different. There are several globe valves that are structured in such a way that many of their parts are inside the cavity itself.

As its main purpose remains to be throttling service and offer positive shut-off, the design permits obstructions that assist the globe valve in fulfilling this purpose. Furthermore, the design also allows changes in flow direction and rate that contributes to a high-pressure drop.

Whereas, gate valves have much simpler construction. Many of its internal parts are found in the valve body’s top part. When the valve is turned on, the body tends to become hollow, which also gives rise to a slight pressure drop.

Function

Globe valves are perfect for controlling media flow along with the deliverance of opening or closing flow operations. On the contrary, gate valves are not ideal for performing the function of flow control, rather for isolating the media.

Also, gate valves are not designed for handling the media flow strength when it is in a partially opened position.
