A Quick Guide for Marine Valves
The role of valves is pretty critical in the marine industry. The large size of the ships require great ability to generate power, treat and maintain wastewater and also regulate the HVAC along with performing their intended tasks.
It is the size and application of the ship that determines the different numbers and types of marine valves used on board. The marine valves are used in almost all sorts of machinery systems found on a ship. This is the reason why high-quality valves are always a priority in marine ships.
We at Dutco Tennant LLC provide a range of marine valves that belong to varied functional categories. Keep reading more to find out about these categories and different types of valves that are available.
4 Main Functional Categories
The different types of marine valves that are available in the market are separated into four main functional categories. Each of these valves fall under in any one of these categories and perform the intended function. The 4 main categories are –
i. Regulation – the valves in this category performs the function of controlling different mechanisms of the ships engine or other systems.
ii. Isolation – the valves in this category helps in separating the fire-line section within the machinery space. They are also used in other sections of the ship where protection is required.
iii. Specialized – as the name itself suggests, in this category the valves perform specialized functions for optimizing the ship operations.
iv. Non-return – the valves in this category perform the function of not allowing the flow return back to the source after the passage.
The different types of valves belong in either of these categories and help operators choose the most ideal marine valve for their requirement.
Some Popular Marine Valve Types Available
Butterfly Valve
This is a simple structure control valve and can be used for low-pressure pipeline medium switch control. The working principle of this valve is driven by the stem when it turns 90 degrees then can completely open and close.
It is a simple structure, small size valve and can achieve good sealing and regulation performance.
Globe Valve
It is a forced sealing valve and therefore, to close the valves it must be operated with valve pressure to force the sealing surface leakage. The closure principle of this valve relies on its bar pressure so that the valve seat sealing surface shuts tightly and prevents medium circulation.
Globe valve in a pipeline medium performs the role of off and throttling as the sealing is applied by a torque to a valve stem.
Check Valve
It relies on the medium flow with automatic open and close and is basically used to prevent the medium from backflow. Therefore, it belongs to the functional category of Non-return and allows to keep the medium flow in only one direction.
Sea Suction Valve
It is also referred to as an inlet valve and is installed on the starboard and ship port. The sea suction valve helps in controlling the ship’s external water into supply water for the purpose of cooling machine and cleaning.
