Heat, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning units(HVAC) are one of the most essential units in office buildings, hospitals, stores, etc. Basically, all commercial buildings need HVAC systems to maintain a uniform cooling or heating effect throughout the building. This helps in keeping a moderate, comfortable temperature around the building which will in turn increase work productivity amongst the employees. When it comes to centralized heating, cooling, and ventilation systems, there are two types of HVAC systems that one has to choose from, the Variable Air Volume boxes or the Constant Air Volume units. Both of these systems have their advantages and drawbacks so contractors and owners must decide wisely as to which one they should go for.

What is a VAV?

VAV boxes are mostly used in multi-zone systems. They are the most common equipment used by commercial buildings to regulate airflow and control temperature. The air temperatures are kept at a constant by VAV boxes, however, they regulate the airflow depending upon the load and temperature. While VAV can be used in single-zone systems, it is more useful in multi-zone systems. The VAV boxes also support the dual duct configuration which allows it to send hot air and cold air to separate locations in the building according to their needs. This makes temperature management very simple, however, these systems tend to be complicated and expensive. VAV boxes are used in large offices, malls, hotels, etc.

What is a CAV?

CAV or constant air volume boxes are prefered to VAVs in single-zone configurations. Unlike VAVs these systems keep a constant airflow, and instead of changing the airflow, the air temperature is changed instead. CAVs can be used in multi-zone systems however, they are not efficient in those scenarios, and VAVs do a much better job in that department. Cav systems can be found in smaller public buildings such as museums, libraries, theatres, etc.

Which one should you go for and where can you buy these units?

The correct type of HVAC depends on the location and the situation. For larger buildings, malls, offices, and hotels, VAVs are required. In smaller buildings like museums, auditoriums, etc, CAVs are more useful. CAVs should be used in single-zone configurations while VAVs should be used in multi-zone and dual duct configurations. No matter whether you are going for CAVs or VAVs, you should always buy these products from trusted suppliers. Dutco Tennant is the most trusted supplier of MEP products in the Middle east and the GCC region. We supply pressure-dependent and pressure-independent VAVs, along with CAVs.
