Firstly we have the stud bolt. This one has a thread on full-lengths or at both ends. It has three components if washers are not used. If you are using a washer it would become five. Sometimes additional nuts are also used for hydraulic tensioning with larger sized studs. The length of the stud bolt must be long enough for covering the entire nut along with 1.5 to 3 exposed threads. Long studs should be avoided as the chance of corrosion and other damage to exposed gets increased which would make subsequent removal difficult. Next is the machine bolt. On one end they have a thread and on the other end, they have a hexagonal head. In the process, piping bolts are utilized with lower strength flange types like bronze, GRE, etc. Washers are used with bolts for preventing excessive load to the flange. We also have commonly used hexagonal heavy-series nuts which are used with studs. The nonbearing face of the nut is chamfered again the load-bearing face is finished with a washer face or can also be chamfered. The washers are thin plates with a hole at the center, they distribute the load on the flange face and this eventually prevents damage to the flange. Washers are required by Non-metallic flange for this reason. Several types of washers are used as splits, flat and conical springs.
The gasket is a sealing material for piping that is placed between connecting flanges for creating a static seal that will maintain the leakage proof sealing in all operating conditions. Several types of gaskets are used for achieving the leak-proof sealing between the pipe flange. The main function of the gasket is to seal off the irregularities of each face of the flange so that there is no leakage of the service fluid from the flange point. It can prove to be disastrous if there is leakage from the flange joint. A leak from a flange results in the loss of product and energy. No plant operator will want the leaking out of toxic or hazardous material which can harm humans and the environment. With the gasket, you can achieve reliable sealing for preventing the leak from the flange joints.
