MI Cable or Mineral Insulated is a special type of cable which is used in high temperatures or harsh environmental conditions as it has low flammability even when operating at high temperatures. It resists oxidation and enables precise measurement. Consists of copper wires inside a copper, stainless steel, or sheath, MI cables are insulated by packed minerals like magnesium oxide (MgO). Magnesium oxide works as an excellent source of insulation as it resists ionizing radiation and oxidation and it is both physically and chemically stable in high temperatures.

The MICC Cable after being packed with MgO insulation may be rolled under pressure for achieving the desired diameter. The outer sheath protects the internal thermocouple wire from chemical, heat, or other environmental damage. The metal sheath can be covered with an additional colored plastic sheath for adding in the identification and for adding an additional protection layer from corrosion. In a mineral insulated cable, any number of wires may be present, but commonly the configurations which are available in 1, 2, or 3 pairs of conductors. In heat treating metals, sintering powdered metals, solid waste incinerators, firing ceramic materials, fuel-fired heat exchangers, gas or oil-fired furnaces, etc, temperature sensors which are manufactured from Mineral insulated cable like thermocouples or RTDs are used.

Advantages of Mineral Insulated Cables

The thermocouple wires are protected from oxidation when used in chemically wet or active environments by the metal sheath which clads MI cable. The cables are ideal for use in areas where replacement and failure could be dangerous or impossible because of the resistance to corrosion. In nuclear plants for monitoring core temperature, these cables are used.

MICC Cables have the mineral filling which offers excellent non-reactive insulation, that prevents the thermocouple wire from contact with each other or with caustic substances like solvents, oils, or water. This helps for ensuring that the thermocouple problems stay critical and accurate in applications like heat-treating or sintering in cases where the temperature fluctuations can adversely affect the quality of the product.

The insulation of the cable does not burn which makes it ideal for applications where fire can be catastrophic. Power plants, medical devices, and oil rigs are examples of places where the installation of MI cables makes operations safer.

As the thermocouple probes are protected from contact with other electrically active wires by the insulation, they are not readily subject to malfunction or inaccurate temperature measurements. They are calibrated carefully for meeting international standards and offer accurate and precise temperature measurements over long duty cycles with little or no loss of accuracy.

These cables can operate in high-temperature conditions with no loss of accuracy. It makes them ideal for firing ceramics, kilns, or heat treating metal or in any high-temperature process. even during and after exposure to high temperatures, they can retain their accuracy.
