Sewage Treatment Plug Valves Wastewater Solutions
Sewage Treatment Plug Valves Wastewater Speciality Valves

Several challenges are faced in wastewater systems by pumps and valves as the flow can contain grit, solids, and debris, depending on where in the process the equipment is located and for this, the eccentric plug valve is often preferred as the valve of choice. It was first used in the 1930s in the paper industry. The eccentric plug valves can handle fluids with solid content in a manner similar to a gate valve. But the plug valves also provide important advantages of a quarter-turn valve such as modulating service. These plug valves consist of a cast iron body and bolted removable cover. The plug has a resilient coating for sealing against a nickel-welded seat in the body. The valve shaft is typically integrally cast as part of the plug and rotates in stainless-steel bearings at the bottom of the body and the cover.

What makes this valve different in that its seat is offset from the valve shaft, thereby providing eccentric action. A mid-size valve may have a half-inch second offset. As the valve opens counterclockwise about the shaft, the double offset causes the plug to lift off the seat as it rotates open. The lifting action helps in preventing wear in gritty wastewater service. There is also pressure actions which are both “Direct” and “reverse”. “Direct” pressure is applied at the end of the valve opposite to the seat and “reverse” pressure is applied at the end of the seat. The sealing function of the valve is assisted by the direct pressure as it pushes the plug tightly into the seat. The valve will also seal with pressure in the reverse pressure direction, but the plug needs to be turned clockwise past the center of the seat. Because of the eccentric action, the greater the closing rotation, the tighter the seal. If the valve becomes worn during service, it can be closed further to restore a leak-tight seal.

Other Details

Plug Valve available in sizes ranging from 1/2" – 72" is designed specifically for wastewater applications. The round port design available on sizes 1/2" – 12", offers the least resistance to slurry, sludge, and fluid flow resulting in less erosion, longer service life, and reduced pumping costs. The large round port design can pass larger solids reducing plugging problems. Round port valves offer the best flow characteristics compared to alternative port openings, resulting in less pressure drop across the valve. Pressure classes on 12" and smaller is 175 psi, pressure classes on 14" and larger is 150 psi, higher pressure on request.
