The use of cable accessories is as important as power cables themselves, since the domain of electric power relies on them significantly. These cable accessories have to be robust, durable, and capable of withstanding external forces and impacts such as weather, while simultaneously must be safe and easy to use.

Today, we are here to discuss different types of medium voltage cable accessories which are also known to be MV cable accessories. These accessories have a voltage ranging between 1kV to 42 kV. But these figures are not definitive as in different countries, different standards and systems are used.

The use of MV cable accessories are significant for the installation of strong medium voltage cable networks and deliver high-quality stability of network and product performance, aside from plenty of other advantages.

Types of Medium Voltage (MV) Cable Accessories

The different types of MV cable accessories are designed and available to serve different purposes. These types are -

Straight Cable Joints

These types of cable joints that are used for joining or connecting two cables that are of similar design. If there is a requirement for extending cables then straight cable joints are used to do so. These joints are preferably used for outdoor, indoor or submerged connecting purposes.

Branch Cable Joints

These are cable accessories that are designed for establishing connection between branch cables and the main cable. These are used typically for polymeric and low voltage cables with their cores anywhere between 1 and 5.

Transition Cable Joints

For varying cable designs, the transition cable joints are used to connect them together. They come extremely handy when connecting a traditional cable with modern style cables made of polymer. These joints also enable to join a 1 core cable to a 3 core cable.

Cable Terminations

These medium voltage cable accessories are used for connecting cables and other equipment, for example, a junction or another cable. They are available in different shapes and sizes. With their usage, experts can ensure that flow of electricity is done to perfection.

Screen Separable Connectors

These accessories are for connecting terminating cables to equipment such as transformers, switchgears and motors. A screen separable connector can be used for indoor or outdoor use.

Aside from screen separable connectors, cable splices and elbows are also used for the same purpose in underground applications.

Types of Installations for MV Cable Accessories

There are essentially three different technologies that are used for installing MV cable accessories and they are -

Cold Shrink Technologies - Here EDPM tubes are used that are expanded on some rigid core. By removing its core, the original shape is retained as the stretched part contracts back to its real form.

Heat Shrink Technologies - This is the simplest of all technologies that is used for cables that have a voltage level lower than 35 kV. The cable accessories are firstly heated and stretched in this installation process. Later it is left in that state for cooling.

Push-on Systems - This type of installation technology is used for MV cable accessories that are not provided in the expanded state. Referred to also as the Slip-on system, here every accessory is tailored into such a size that can be fitted into the cable easily without the use of any special machines or tools.
