A check valve is a critical component which sometimes is overlooked. It is commonly seen to be fitted at the end of a channel or pipe and performs the role of a non-return/one-way valve that opens under pressure.

Check valves allow the media to pass through it but obstructs any reverse flow through it. They are available in varied sizes, materials and designs. Choosing a particular design, size and material can have an impact on the efficiency of the component.

At this year’s ADIPEC 2022 exhibition, Dutco Tennant LLC is showcasing its top-rated products in which their quality check valves will be featured as well. Starting from 31st October 2022, visitors will be able to see the products for demonstrations and gain valuable insights.

But before you make a visit to the event, here are a few of the check valve types that you should know about. Continue to read till the end to find out different types of check valves available.

Types of Check Valves

Check valves are designed to serve many purposes and roles, therefore, are used in a variety of applications. From residential settings to large-scale industrial facilities, they are found in different settings. This only means that there are different types of check valves that are designed to meet the demands of a particular project. Some of them are -

Swing Check Valves

Swing check valves are the simplest of all the designs and can be found in homes or in large-scale industries as well. This type of check valve includes a metal disc that turns on a trunnion or hinge in order to prevent backflow.

In many large-scale check valves, this design is used mainly because of its simplicity. It generally offers a lifespan of five to seven years and therefore, may require frequent replacement.

Swing check valves are prone to rusting and may have a jamming issue due to debris accumulation. If these valves are continued to be used in such conditions without any repair or replacement then it will allow reverse flow and also cause water hammer problems.

Duckbill Check Valves

It was in the 1980s that the duckbill check valve came into use. Over the decades, their use has grown and become popular in industrial applications. A duckbill check valve similar to a duck's bill and allows the media to pass through it.

The Duckbill check valves greatly depend on a flexible rubber diaphragm which creates a valve that will remain shut unless there is positive pressure application. Unlike swing check valves, rubber duckbill check valves are minimally prone to rusting and cannot seize or bind making them to be one of the most reliable and long-lasting check valves in the market today.

Ball & Spring Check Valves

These check valves are well-known for their durable performance and easy installations. They are intended to operate when the inlet pressure exceeds the cracking pressure as this causes a ball or disc to be pushed back and overcome the spring’s strength.

The reverse flow of media is prevented in this type of check valve when the inlet pressure goes down the cracking pressure or backflow occurs, the spring forces the valve to shut. Therefore, stopping the water travelling or escaping back up the pipe.
