Surge arrester and bushing are two of the cable accessories that will be featured in our booth D10, hall 5 of Dubai World Trade Centre. Before you make a stop at our booth, here’s a quick refresher of how critical these cable accessories are for the grid system performance.

 

Understanding The Role of surge arrester function

 

Sudden surge of electricity racing through power lines, is an occurrence caused by either lightning strikes, switching operations or other unforeseen events. Without any protective barrier, these abrupt surges can wreak havoc to electrical equipment.

This ultimately leads to damage, downtime and hefty repair costs. Surge arresters are engineered exactly for preventing these problems. Their role is to divert the excess voltage caused in these situations and put a limit on rising current during a surge.

They spring into action swiftly offering a low-impedance route for the surge to dissipate into the ground harmlessly. This not only protects the critical equipment of the grid system but also prevents hazards such as fire outbreak or explosions.

In terms of voltage and current conditions, surge arresters are available in a variety of forms, including metal oxide varistors (MOVs) and silicone-based designs. In accordance with IEEE 1815-2016, surge arresters should be capable of handling surges up to 50 kA.

 

Exploring the Role of Bushing Inserts

 

Also simply referred to as Bushing, these are also a type of protective cable accessory that offers needed insulation. They play the role of internal insulation and connection within electrical equipment.

Bushings operate to allow electrical conductors to go through barriers and walls without any compromise to their safety or performance. In addition to providing additional layers of protection and enhancing electrical equipment's overall performance, bushing inserts are integral to surge arrester solutions.

With their use, electrical stress can be managed while preventing flashovers and ensuring a reliable connection between different components.

 

The bushing inserts improve insulation and support, reducing flashover risk. They also ensure a safe, reliable connection between the various components of the electrical grid, especially when electrical stress is high.

Regularly checking surge arresters and bushings for wear and tear is important, as well as ensuring that voltage ratings are correct and they are compatible with environmental conditions like humidity.

36/102kV Coupling T Surge Arrester:

It is not just an ordinary surge arrester but is combined within a coupling (rear) in a T-body interface. It is designed to provide fully shielded deadfront arrester protection.

This one has a combination of both bushing well and bushing insert. Both perform the same function as an integral one-piece loadbreak bushing. It provides the flexibility to change bushing insert on site without needing to take the electrical apparatus out of service.
