Chardon Group provides several underground distribution connectors for these applications, beginning with its 15 kV, 200A Loadbreak Elbow (15-LE200).

The loadbreak elbow is a fully shielded, insulated and submersible termination designed to connect underground cable to transformers, switchgear and other equipment fitted with compatible loadbreak interfaces. Chardon identifies the loadbreak elbow and bushing insert as primary components within ANSI/IEEE loadbreak connections.

For utilities and contractors working with underground networks, this type of separable connection provides a practical interface between the cable system and distribution equipment.

Completing the 15 kV Loadbreak Interface

A loadbreak elbow works as part of a wider connection system.

The 15 kV, 200A Bushing Insert (15-LBI200) threads into a standard 200A bushing well and creates the interface required for a loadbreak connection.

An advantage of this arrangement is flexibility. Chardon states that the bushing insert can be replaced in the field without removing the transformer or other apparatus from service, and installation does not require special tools.

For engineers specifying cable connectors, this illustrates why component compatibility is just as important as the individual electrical ratings.

Creating Greater Flexibility with Feed-Thru Connections

Distribution networks may also need more than one connection point at a transformer or other apparatus.

The 15 kV Loadbreak Feed-Thru Insert (15-LFTI) is designed to thread onto a standard 200A bushing well and provide two loadbreak bushing interfaces.

This allows a radial-feed transformer to be converted into a feed-thru arrangement and can also create an interface for additional arrester protection where required.

Chardon’s design includes a torque-limiting ratchet feature and allows 360-degree rotation for positioning during installation. The product meets IEEE Standard 386 requirements and, when used with compatible components, creates a shielded and submersible loadbreak connection.

This type of flexibility can be valuable when distribution layouts need to accommodate changing circuit arrangements or additional protection equipment.

Protecting the Network Against Overvoltage

A medium-voltage cable network also needs protection against transient overvoltages that may place stress on cables and connected equipment.

Chardon Group’s 15 kV, 25 kV and 35 kV Elbow Arresters integrate a metal oxide varistor module within a rubber elbow to provide overvoltage protection.

The products are designed according to IEEE 386 and can be applied at pad-mounted transformers, entry cabinets, vaults and switching equipment. Chardon notes that elbow arresters can be installed around open points in loop systems and at the end of radial systems to support equipment protection and cable life.

By integrating surge protection within a separable connector format, an elbow arrester can become part of the underground distribution architecture rather than functioning as an unrelated component.

Handling Higher-Current Connections with T-Body Connectors

Not every medium-voltage application operates at 200A.

For higher-current underground cable connections, Chardon Group offers the 15/25 kV, 600A / 900A T-Body (15/25-TB600).

The T-Body is designed to terminate underground cables onto high-voltage equipment such as transformers and switchgear. It is fully shielded and submersible and is designed to meet IEEE Standard 386 requirements.

For project engineers, the T-Body provides another option when selecting medium-voltage cable connectors according to system current, voltage class and equipment interface.

Correct sizing remains important because the connector must be matched to both the cable insulation diameter and conductor size.

Connecting to IEC Equipment Interfaces

Distribution systems do not always use the same interface standards.

The 36 kV, 400A Interface B Equipment Bushing (36-DIB400) provides a plug-in connection for equipment using an IEC Interface B arrangement.

Manufactured from epoxy, the bushing is designed to meet CENELEC EN 50180 and IEC 60137 requirements and is intended for oil-filled equipment such as transformers, switchgear and capacitors.

Including both IEEE/ANSI and IEC-oriented products within the Chardon range gives engineers options for projects built around different equipment and cable-accessory standards.

Protecting Unused Interfaces

Even an unused medium-voltage interface needs appropriate insulation and shielding.

The 600A, 35 kV Insulated Protective Cap (35-DIC600) is designed to provide insulated, shielded and submersible protection for compatible 35 kV deadbreak interfaces.

The product uses EPDM insulation with a semi-conducting insert and outer shield and is designed according to IEEE 386 requirements.

Protective caps may look like relatively simple accessories, but they perform an important role in ensuring unused interfaces remain properly protected within the overall distribution system.

Moving from Connection to Automatic Network Protection

Cable accessories form one part of distribution reliability. Switching and fault isolation form another.

Chardon Group’s Epoxy Solid Recloser (CKMR) extends the portfolio into medium-voltage distribution protection.

An automatic circuit recloser is used within distribution networks to interrupt fault current and support restoration where system and protection settings permit. Chardon’s epoxy solid recloser incorporates external overvoltage protection and uses epoxy insulation designed to resist ageing, cracking and UV exposure in overhead applications.

The recloser range is available for systems up to 38 kV and is tested in accordance with IEC 62271-111.

For utilities looking at network reliability, a medium-voltage recloser therefore represents a different layer of the distribution system than the cable connectors but both contribute to how power is safely delivered and controlled.

Simplifying Medium-Voltage Cable Termination

At the end of the cable, correct termination is essential for controlling electrical stress and creating a dependable interface.

Chardon Group’s IEEE/ANSI Indoor Cold Shrink Termination (CSTI) is available for medium-voltage cables up to 35 kV.

The termination uses a silicone rubber housing containing a stress-control compound. It is supplied pre-expanded on a removable support tube; when the tube is removed, the housing contracts around the prepared cable.

This installation method does not require a heat source or specialised shrinking tools. Chardon states that the indoor CSTI is designed for voltage classes up to 35 kV and meets IEEE Standard 48 requirements

For installers working with medium-voltage cables, cold shrink termination can simplify the installation process while providing the electrical stress control required at the cable end.
