What will pass over the access point?
BS EN 124 classifications relate covers and gratings to their installation areas. Dutco Tennant's verified FRP range includes B125, C250 and D400 options, while the ductile iron range extends from B125 to F900.
Consultants should specify the required class, clear opening, cover shape and frame depth for each location. A certified cover also needs full frame support, suitable bedding and sound pavement reinstatement. A high rating cannot compensate for a weak chamber top or settlement around the opening.
How aggressive is the GCC exposure?
FRP Manhole Covers are lightweight, waterproof and corrosion resistant. Their non-metallic construction does not rust, which is useful in coastal, landscaped and damp utility environments. Circular, square and rectangular formats are available within the verified range.
Ductile iron offers high strength and a broad choice of solid-top, recessed, hinged, double-triangular and grating configurations. How will maintenance teams use it?
FRP's lower weight can simplify transport and routine opening, while larger ductile iron covers may require lifting assistance. Both need approved tools and safe access procedures. Locking and seating details should reflect access frequency, security needs and the risk of movement or noise under traffic.

Carry the decision from submittal to handover
Before procurement, compare the schedule with product certificates, drawings and installation instructions. At handover, link each cover and lifting key to its recorded chamber. Photographs of the frame support, chamber build-up and finished level provide a useful inspection baseline.
