Y-Strainers are devices that are used for mechanically removing the unwanted solids from gas, liquid, or steam lines with the help of a perforated or wire mesh straining element. They are used in pipelines for protecting the meters, pumps, steam traps, control valves, regulators, and other process equipment. Y-Strainers are highly cost-effective solutions for several applications. By shutting down the line and removing the strainer cap, the strainer screen is cleaned manually in cases where the amount of material required to be removed from the flow is very small and results in long intervals of screen cleanings. While in use in several types of liquid applications, a Y-Strainer is considered to be the standard for steam applications and is almost universally used for these applications. It has a compact, cylindrical shape and is very strong for handling high pressures; it is mainly a pressure vessel. Apart from steam, Y-Strainers are also used in natural gas and air applications. Here also, high pressures are not that uncommon. But unlike steam, high air pressure does not automatically means high temperature and so, ordinary carbon steel bodies having sufficient wall thickness will suffice generally. Unlike the other types of strainers, a Y-Strainer comes with the advantage of being able to be installed in either a horizontal or vertical position. In both cases, the screening elements need to be on the downside of the strainer body so that the entrapped material can collect it out properly. Some of the manufacturers reduce the size of the strainer body for saving material and reduce costs. Always ensure before installing a Y-Strainer, that it is large enough for properly handling the flow. Y-Strainers are available with a wide variety of end connections including threaded, flanged, and welded.
